Mentor Coach Paul Locker

I’m honored that Heather has invited me to appear on her website to tell you about my coaching practice.  Heather is a gifted coach and a deep soul.  My life is richer having her in it.

Complementary Practices

Our coaching practices are complementary.  We share values, rooting our practices in empathic pragmatism.  Where we differ is emphasis and modality.  Heather’s emphasis is inward.  Her modalities include hypnotherapy and guided imagery.  My emphasis is outward.  My modalities include the options-creating methodologies of ideation and collaborative brainstorming, the measurable results-driven orientation of management consulting, the analytical rigors of business and law, law’s tough questioning toward truth, and the blockage-clearing techniques of mediation.  I ground it all in “mindfulness,” an ancient technique growing from Buddhist meditation and now being applied as an effective method in its own right for self-knowing and effective action.

A beautiful part of the way Heather and I coach that can benefit a client is our ability to refer to one another.  Because our practices are so complementary, we can suggest to a client that he or she work with the other on discrete issues or for targeted application of particular modalities.

And then, of course, sometimes a client simply prefers to work with a man or with a woman.

What I Can Do For You

I can help you keep the promises you’ve made to yourself.

If you’re doubting those very promises, I can help you recast them so they better align with your truest self.

Then I can help you set a path to those goals, along with a timetable and milestones you can use to measure your progress.  I can help you better align your daily living with your life’s goals.  If you choose, we’ll check in together along the way to confirm direction, take stock and make adjustments.

I’m a confidant.  Someone to bounce things off.  Someone you can be you with fully and openly.

But I’m also a reality check.

I’ll hold you accountable.  I’ll ask some tough questions, gently.  I’ll advocate for the goals you’ve set for yourself.  I’ll call you on your bull - especially when you’re tossing it at yourself.  I’ll do that firmly but compassionately and without shaming.

All the while, I’m on your side, in your corner, on your team.

I’m not a therapist (I am married to one, though: my wife’s a clinical psychologist in private practice in Santa Monica).  What you and I do together isn’t therapy.  And though I’m a lawyer, I won’t be your lawyer.  What you and I do together isn’t attorney-client.

I’m coaching.  Mentoring.  I’m someone to help you see the forest for the trees, to hold your feet to the fire - the fire in your belly, the fire that is your ambition, your longing, your dreams, your wished-for life.

I work for you and with you to help get you there.

A Bit About Me

I bring to coaching 25 years of experience deep in the worlds of business, law and the arts.  I coach enlightened by my successes and my failures.  I’ve had my share of both; it’s true what they say about learning more from wrong answers than from right ones.  And so I’ve acquired - earned might be more accurate - wisdom to share.  I make that available to you so you can shorten and straighten your path to your dreams.

Among the more uncommon tools I use to coach are the professional mediator’s skills moving people past conflicts that block them from acting in their own best interests.  Mediating in court and in private practice, I’ve cleared those self-defeating blockages myriad times to help people quickly reach binding settlement of lawsuits.  I can use my mediation training and experience to help you resolve conflicts - inner and interpersonal - that are blocking you from being where you want to be.

As a long-time meditator in the Buddhist Vipassana tradition of present-moment awareness, I hold a powerful tool that enhances my effectiveness as a coach and, in turn, placed in your hands can enhance your effectiveness day-to-day.

Lastly, I know well the challenges of balancing career and family: I’m married and have a full house with a young daughter, a cat and a dog.

How I Work

Each coaching relationship I undertake is unique.  Each is tailored to the individual.  I work only one-on-one.  No teleseminars.  You.  Me.  That’s it.

I sculpt in stone, steel and clay, which I find immensely rewarding.  Sculpting is also an apt metaphor for my work as coach.  Michelangelo, speaking of his remarkable David, put it this way: “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”

My Coaching Philosophy And Plan

My goal is to help you activate your true creative and business self and integrate it for success in your personal and professional life.

Whether you’re a teen who is stuck in school and needing some creative inspiration to understand your tedious science or math homework in an unconventional but effective manner, or a Senior Vice President who has lost your enthusiasm for your job and your life, I’m here to help.  I want you to live “The Dani Experience.”  I will encourage you to honor your creativity in multi-expressive venues.  Actors cook.  Writers sing.  Computer-whizzes dance.  There are no blocks, creative or otherwise.  I have never experienced them and I do not believe in them.

My coaching, much like Heather’s, is quick and easy.  There is no need to inflict pain in your gain.  We’ll keep the FUN in our functional (one of my mantras).  I suggest a period of six weeks for your creative evolution.  Although shorter than a college quarter, a great deal can be accomplished in six brief weeks.  You will be in charge.  My talent is to make your visions viable and help you access the action you need to get going.

I look forward to working with you and sharing my brand of SMART ART, exploring your acquisition of both the practical and the creative – your success-blend that will have you living your life as an expression of your true self and making money doing it.

About Me As A Creativity Coach

I am excited to be part of Heather’s Creative Team as her key Creativity Coach.  Heather Hayward has been my Life Coach for two years now.  We have managed to co-opt fun and inspiration as we solve many of life’s dilemma’s together.  And that’s one of my main coaching philosophies:  using creativity to solve life’s situations.  Not every change in life has to be painful!  I’m here to show you how to find creative inspiration and look at your life in an entirely new, refreshing way.

I’m a Creativity Coach who believes in the power of combining art and business.   I’ve had the good fortune to parlay my passion for art and business into several successful ventures.  These experiences are the foundation for my plan to share my skills, beliefs and methods of living the Business of Your Life, Artfully.

My background in teaching and mentoring both adults and teens has made me aware of  the different ways in which people acquire knowledge.  I encourage creativity in people to express themselves and find validation from the “inside-out.”  I then aide my clients by illustrating how to channel this creativity into success in the business world.

I am so excited to introduce you to two exceptional coaches who have two very different specialties.  I consider myself blessed to have them as part of my team.  If you need someone grounded in business and centering practices to help you clarify your life’s callings and follow through on a realistic plan to live them, Paul Locker is your man.  If you’re trying to tap into that “right brain” creative juice, I highly recommend Dani Harrold.  Please read more about them below and feel free to contact me if you have any questions. -- HH
